These tools are used to explain the spatial variations in the
nature of population of any given place.
Sources of
Population Studies
The sources of data used in population studies are:
Quantitative data: Quantitative data are expressed in
numbers,
For example:
Height,
Weight and Total population.
Qualitative data : Qualitative data refers to categorized
data / non-numric data,
for example:
sex (male or female), social status (rich or
poor) etc
Population Census
The United Nations defines the population census as:
‘‘Total process of Collecting, Evaluating, Analyzing, and
publishing or otherwise disseminating demographic, economic and social data
pertaining, at a specified time, to all persons in a country or in a well
delimited part of a country’’. (UN,1998)
Following are the basic highlights of population studies:
* Census is done usually within the interval of 10 years.
* Information obtained from census records includes;
-> Age
-> Sex
-> Marital status
-> Education
-> Religion
-> Place of birth
-> Size of Population etc
Types of population census:
There are two approaches of population census are;
De jure
Approach: This is done by counting and obtaining information from
individuals at their places of residence during census.
De facto
approach: It means whenever the individual happens to be at the census
period, is where he will be counted and information obtained regardless of his
place of residence or abode.
